In For a Benny #6 - The Truck

Last time we looked in our team they were raiding the security armor located in Benny Colony and had found several blasters, food, spare clothing, and other goods that would be critical to evacuating refugees in what was a collapsed colony following a horde of zombies purportedly unleashed from the hospital and science center of the colony. Survivors are scattered across the colony, but the party managed to make contact with the organized resistance in the region. The party decided to search the armory first and found the building being ransacked by wolf barbarian raiders of the Crimson Claw clan. Having dealt with most of the raiders, including a minor war boss named Hephaestus, the party now had to decide how they were going to move the gear.

A: Yes.
Element Alterations? Y - Decrease major element.

The zombies are either too scattered or not particularly interested in the armory as they have yet to respond, the only trouble is coming down the road from a cargo truck that Crimson Claws are using.

Does Ozzie hear the sound? Perception: 18 - Success, he does hear the truck’s engine and he is able to alert the others.

“A struggle, but this is also an opportunity,” Morrigan noted as she charged her blaster.

“These guys are going to be on alert, though, probably led by the one that got away,” Starkweather said.

“They’ll be ready, we’ll be ready,” Morrigan said, accepting the situation and hoping for the odds being her favor over theirs.

With the party aware of the cargo truck moving, they try to position themselves accordingly. Ozzie ducks behind the corner of the nearby building. Starkweather and Victor remain together in the main hangar of the armory while Morrigan makes her way towards the barracks section to try and flank.

The truck began to rumble towards the entrance. The driver and veteran ignoring Rockefeller (Raider #1 from last session)'s repeated warnings and believing that any resistance would crumble at the sound of a vehicle. There were five more raiders sitting in the cargo bed with slug rifles on their laps or laying nearby. The veteran was feeling confident.

Ozzie attempted to surprise the driver. Stealth - Natural 1.
He popped out and locked eyes with the drive. The vehicle pulls up short and the driver ducks down, warning the veteran about the danger ahead.

Veteran jumps down from the truck and fires a shotgun at Ozzie. Attk: Natural 20 - Crit. D: 12. Ozzie HP: 13/25

Raider’s 1-5 begin to pile out the back of the truck with rifles in hand. They are followed by Rockerfeller, the Survivor (Formerly Raider #1).

Rockerfeller is giving warnings, “Do not underestimate these people. They’ve got a Moon Guard prince with them and they are heavily armed.”

Driver ducks down and reaches for his raider short blade but remains behind the controls.

Morrigan attempts to use Stealth to ambush one of the disembarking Raiders. Stealth: 16 vs. Perception: 10 - Success. She ambushes a target for Assasinate. Attk: 24 - Hit. D: 33. Raider #1 HP: 0/20 - Slain.

Morrigan gets a free Stealth check to hide. Hide: 23 - Success. The raiders are spooked, but do not immediately spot her.

Morrigan backs into the bunker.

Ozzie attacks Veteran w/ Blaster Rifle. Attk: 15 - Hit. D: 12. Veteran HP: 12/24.
Ozzie uses Second Wind and heals 12. Ozzie HP: 25/25

Victor charges from around the side and engages the veteran with sword play. Attk: 18 - Hit. D: 6.
Veteran HP: 6/24

Starkweather moves out of the hangar and gets behind the building to the right of the entrance.

Veteran drops the shotgun and draws his warblade. Attk: 11 / 20 - Miss/Hit. D: 6. Victor HP: 24/32

Raider #2 moves around the truck and fires at Ozzie. Attk: 11 - Miss

Raider #3 moves around the truck and takes a position to fire at Starkweather across the way. Attk: 10 - Miss.

Raider #4 moves around the back of the building to flank the group. He is followed by Raider #5.

Rockefeller moves to the Barrack entrance. He opens the door and starts inside. He gets a Perception vs. Morrigan's stealth.
Results: 15 Perception vs. 26 Stealth - Morrigan holds her breath and hides with her back against the wall as Rockefeller moves inside.

Victor attacks Veteran w/ Sword. Attk: 20 - Hit. D: 8. Veteran HP: 4/24

Morrigan fires into Rockefeller’s backside. Attk: 21 - Hit. Assassinate! D: 27. Rockefeller HP: 0/20 - Slain. She makes her way to the door outer door and into the alley as stealthy as possible. Stealth: 13 vs. Passive Perception: 10 - Success.

Ozzie exchanges shots with Raider #2 w/ Blaster Rifle. Attk: 12 - Miss.
Action Surge (0/1 Remaining). Attk: 9 - Miss

Starkweather exchanges shots with Raider #3 w/ Blaster Rifle. Attk: 23 - Hit. D: 9. Raider #3 HP: 11/20

Round #3 
Veteran roars with pain but continues to press the attack on Victor w/ a warblade. Attk: 9 / 12 - Miss / Miss. He risks a Parting Shot by breaking melee and making a run for it.

Victor (Parting Shot): 18 - Hit. D: 7. Veteran HP: 0/24 - Slain

Seeing his leader die, the Driver tries to gun the truck and slam Victor.
Victor must make a Dexterity Save vs. 11 or take damage (3d6): 17 - Success. Victor dives into the hangar as the truck moves past and then rounds the corner to Starkweather’s side.

Raider #2 attacks Ozzie w/ Slug Rifle. Attk: 17 - Hit. D: 3. Ozzie HP: 22/25

Raider #3 attacks Starkweather w/ Slug Rifle. Attk: 21 - Hit. D: 2. Starkweather HP: 23/25

Raider #4 appears around the corner, flanking Starkweather and attacking w/ Slug Rifle. Attk: 10 - Miss

Raider #5 drops his slug rifle and draws a waraxe and charges. Attk: 16 - Hit. D: 4. Starkweather HP: 19/25

Morrigan steps around the corner and Ambushes Raider #2 w/ Blaster SMG. Attk: 14 - Hit. D: 31. Raider #2 HP: 0/20 - Slain.

Morrigan gets a free Stealth check to try and hide after killing Raider #2. Stealth: 14 vs. 10 - Success

Ozzie turns to see Starkweather being flanked and attacks Raider #5 w/ Blaster Rifle. Attk: 21 - Hit. D: 10. Raider #5 HP: 10/20. Ozzie has his back to the wall, he cannot be spotted by Raider #3.


Starkweather performs a Disengage and moves to the Hangar with Victor.

Round #4 
Driver: Slows the cargo truck for Raider #4 and #5 to climb aboard.

Raider #5 forgoes trying to catch Starkweather and opts instead to spend a double move to climb aboard.

Raider #4 climbs into the passenger abin.

Raider #3 makes a double move, crossing the grounds and heading towards the cargo bed. Out of the three, Raider #3 is most exposed as he still ahs to climb up into the bed.

Ozzie attacks Raider #3 w/ Blaster Rifle. Attk: 15 - Hit. D: 10. Raider #3 HP: 10/20

Victor activates RAGE! (0/2 Remaining) and charges around the corner and towards the truck. He has to perform an Athletics check at the end of a run to jump past Raider #3 and into the cargo bay with Raider #5. Athletics: 27 - Success. He is aboard, much to the surprise and terror of Raider’s #3 and #5.


Morrigan moves down the now empty alley to the front of the Hanger. She uses her Dash to get past the hangar and the opposite alley where the truck is. She cannot ambush, but she does get a shot on Raider #3 w/ Blaster SMG. Attk: 11 - Miss


Starkweather moves from the hangar and fires at Raider #3 w/ Blaster Rifle. Attk: 15 - Hit. D: 6. Raider #3 HP: 6. Raider #3 HP: 5/20 HP

Round #4
Raider #5 attacks Victor with Waraxe. Attk: Natural 20 - D: 16/2 = 8. Victor HP: 16/32


Driver panics and accelerates the truck, leaving Raider #3 to fend for himself. Driver Check: 7 - His driving is sporadic and it leaves both Victor and Raider #5 on an unstable platform.


Raider #4 sticks his body out the window and tries to fire at Starkweather. Unstable Platform. Attk: 12 - Miss


Raider #3 turns around, sees Morrigan, Starkweather, and Ozzie standing there and throws down his weapon. He surrenders.


Victor attacks Raider #5 w/ Sword. Reckless Attack. Attk: 19 - Hit. D: 13. Raider #5 HP: 0/20 - Slain. Victor stabs and tosses Raider #5 through the cab window.


Driver must make an immediate driving check from the body hitting the glass! Drive: 13 - Success. Is able to get control of the vehicle.


Ozzie moves and kneels down, taking aim at Raider #4 out the window. He uses Tactical Aid on himself (0/1 Remaining). 22 - Hit. D: 10. Raider #4 HP: 0/10 - Slain. Takes a bolt and falls out the window.


Starkweather watches Raider #3 while Morrigan moves to push aside and secure the slug rifle he was carrying.


Morrigan, blaster smg drawn, orders the Crimson Claw to drop his melee weapon from his side. “Toss it against the wall.”


Raider #3 complies. He is sincerely trying to avoid getting into a fight.

Round #5
Driver opens the door and dives out of the cab to avoid getting stabbed by Victor. Tuck and roll. Athletics: 21 - Success. Driver successfully abandons the truck.

(Q: Is the truck aimed at a building? A: No, but it will veer into one within one round.)

Victor tries to risk it by making an Athletics check to climb in and stop the vehicle before it hits something. Check: 20 - Success. He manages to catch the door that the Driver left over, climb in, and apply the brakes.

Ozzie moves up to the scene, one to aid Victor, and possibly take/kill the Driver. When he arrives, he find the truck but not Driver.

Victor backs the truck to the armory and jumps down when he sees that Morrigan and Starkweather are guarding one of the Crimson Claws. The two wolves exchanged pointed stares, bearing teeth at one another before Victor turned to address the Rabbitfolk.

"What do you propose we do with this one?" Victor asked.

"What would you have us do?" Morrigan asked, she had an idea which made her frown.

Victor took one look and said, "Offer him a duel with our claws until one of us is left alive."

"He surrendered," Starkweather said, "We may not be able to trust him enough to take him back, but we could treat his wounds and send him on his way."

“Then you do it,” Victor said before walking off, “He’d cut your throat in your sleep.”

Starkweather treats Raider #4 w/ Remote Healing and Administer Aid. Raider is healed 6. Raider #3 HP: 9/20.

Starkweather holds up the slug rifle and waraxe, setting them against the wall: “We can’t take you with us to where we need to go. It would also be a death sentence to let you wander unarmed. So this is the deal, and the only one you’ll get. Your rifle is loaded, your waraxe is there. You have your rations and canteen.” Starkweather picked up another canteen from a falling raider and tosses it to Raider #3. “There’s more water. You don’t try to follow us, and we’re taking the cargo truck. Where you go is your business, but if you try anything there will be no mercy.”

The Raider glared at Starkweather for a moment before blinking, he was taken aback by the mercy being shown. As Starkweather walked off, the Raider kept staring before finally moving to gather his things. He looked up a short whistle and saw Morrigan standing nearby with her Blaster SMG drawn.

“Don’t get any ideas at this moment. Just walk away,” She said.

Raider #3 stood up and then turned to walk away. He slipped down an alley and was gone.

Having recovered the truck in good order, the party adds the following equipment taken from the fallen Wolf Barbarians.

With the equipment gathered, the party boards the truck and prepares to head back to the refugee camp located on the southside of the city. Morrigan is driving the truck, her specialty as the mechanic of the pair. Starkweather rides with her in the cab. Ozzie and Victor take their spot in the back of the covered cargo bed, wedged between all of the gear that they grabbed up.

Q: Is the ride smooth?
A: No, Morrigan has to make a few drive checks to navigate through the city. There is a 1-in-6 chance that they run into a zombie pack. Morrigan needs to get 4 successes in 5 rounds before the truck breaks down.

The party heard it before they drew close to the refugee center. Morrigan managed to move through an alley that avoided detection, but even though she could not see it, she could hear the exchange of gunfire. Ozzie and Victor got out and moved to the edge of the alley, when Ozzie looked around the corner, he could see the side of the refugee building and the shape of bodies from the psycho zombies. He was not sure if the building had fallen, but there was an on-going attack occurring in the area.
