I decided to tackle the module B1-B9 'In Search of Adventure' which can also be considered the Karameikos Campaign as all of the modules are set in the region, it even includes a map of the grand duchy, in a way, this solo campaign could be considered something of a Mystara campaign, with the addition to things such as Dragonborn to the mix. Now, let's see what our characters are up to.
---
Our adventure begins in a tavern...
We set our scene in the city of Threshold, the northernmost point of the Grand Duchy of Karameikos. The last step past Windrush Lake before entering the mountains that separated the duchy from the rest of the Known World. It is here that several adventurers have gathered at the Old Coats Inn to form a party in response to an advertisement that the local merchant, Clifton Caldwell, has put up about trouble occurring at this lakeside castle west of town. The merchant has recently purchased the castle, but the monsters and rascals have been infesting it, and after waiting patiently for the local guards to handle the problem, Clifton has instead turned to hired adventurers to handle the matter. The band that the merchant has hired includes the following:
Warwick Lancaster - Human Fighter who is the heir to his father’s land in Lancastershire, but is expected to gain some worldly experience. He has been given basic gear, a little more than average starting gold, and sent on his way. He met the other members of his party at the inn.
Topace - Topace is a Dragonborn from a city in southern Karameikos known as Specularum. In fact, Topace’s full name is Topace of Specularum. He is a Dragonborn mercenary of the Topaz flight.
Lucille Pangborn - Lucille often wears a pair of shaded glasses to protect her eyes and a shaded hat to keep the sun away. Her pale skin is not mere aesthetics, Lucille was born under a vampire’s touch. She is a Dhampir who must remain on the borderlands of civilization. She is merely tolerated in a city such as Threshold.
Branwell Steadywrench - The Gnome wielding a Gnome Hooked-Hammer. Branwell is a Cleric of the Gem King. He is a Cleric and Jewelcrafter.
Messalina Pennyweight - Is a Thief and a member of the Pennyweight Goblin Clan. Like all Pennyweights, Messalina was born into the world of banking, which is how the Pennyweight’s established themselves from other Goblin clans and cartels. Like Warwick, she is more-or-less expected to get some experience out in the real world.

(Pictured Left: Clifton Caldwell)
The party meets Clifton in his private room at 'Telsa's Meadery' with the yellow and white stained glass windows that opened out to the bar when Master Caldwell needed to call out for a drink. The Meadery was a few blocks away from the Old Coats where the party has settled in.
Caldwell was smoking from a long black filter as he looked over the assembled party.
"I won't go higher than a hundred apiece. Half now for each member, half when I can put my feet in front of the fire after you've cleared the keep."
"Nobody can live off a hundred gold these days, boss," Messalina noted. She might have been greedy, but she went over the costs of food and lodgings that were a step above sharing the common room at the inn.
"A hundred marks is my final offer," Clifton put his hands up, as if to say 'take it or leave it.'
---
Messalina attempts to negotiate, noting that this party was the first to respond to his offer after what has felt like a week of silence from the community. Messalina Charisma check: Natural 20
Messalina gets Caldwell to go up the maximum he is willing and able to go at an apiece rate. 250 gold apiece to clear out the castle. Half now, half on completion.
Party receives 125 per member.
---
“I don’t think anyone could argue with these results,” Messalina noted smugly after the party had another round of drinks after meeting with Caldwell. He was quick to dismiss them after the negotiations and instead held court with a fetching young woman that could help work the knots that Caldwell had suddenly developed.
“You could have also cost the deal,” Branwell noted dryly, sipping his tea. Branwell was a Gnome, but a lot more quieter than his kin. It came from working with gems and baubles over trying to be an inventor.
“We would have gotten the hundred anyway,” Messalina said, “Our man is desperate to clean that castle out.”
“Still, it was a risky maneuver,” Branwell replied.
“You like having that extra seventy-five on you? If you don’t, I’ll take it,” Messalina raised her hand, smirking as she watched Branwell’s hand drift to his money pouch, as if she could magically slip coins from under his nose.
“You did good work, Messalina,” Warwick said, puffing on his cigar, “Let’s get this business done in short order. I’m hoping for bigger prospects after we receive positive word-of-mouth from this man.”
---
Clifton provides a general outline of the castle's outer fortification along with a trail map that takes the party from Threshold to Castle Caldwell (What Clifton intends to name the castle once he’s done). The party makes their way east through a trail that cuts through moderately dense forest until they at last reach a castle by the coast. The keep itself is built more for comfort than defensiveness. There are multiple windows in the room, which were excellent for providing natural light in the chambers. The party approaches the double doubles. At the entrance, Warwick steps aside and lets Messalina investigate.
---
Messalina Investigate: 16 - Moderate+ Success. She is certain the doors are not trapped, checking confirms that the doors are unlocked.
---
The party moves in the following formation: Warwick, Lucille, Branwell, Messalina, and Topace bringing up the rear. The party moves up 20 feet and reaches the first door on the left and, as per policy, Messalina is sent to the front to check the door.
---
Investigate: 17 - No signs of traps or being locked. She is so sure that she opens the door herself and reveals an empty dining room that is covered in cobwebs. The party does a quick search under and around the benches and tables.
Perception Results
Warwick: 5 - Very Easy Success. He sees what is more or less in front of him.
Topace: Nat 20 - Critical. He finds a sack that contains clinking silver coins. He puts it on one of the tables, beaming with excitement.
Lucille: 18 - Very respectable roll. She also spotted the bag around the same time as Topace. She is confident the room is otherwise empty.
Branwell: 7 - Very Easy Success. He sees what is more-or-less in front of him. He’s also small, so he sees table legs more often than not.
Messalina: 1 - She gets a nose full of dust. Achoo!
---
“Plenty of silver,” Topace notes.
“Not a fan of it,” Lucille said with a frown. Although she was not a true vampire, deep within her was an aversion to the blessed metal, granted, coined silver was not pure enough to be used as a weapon, but knowing that within those coins was a core of that metal filled her with dislike.
“Good haul so far. Caldwell said nothing about splitting whatever we found here with him,” Messalina said, “Afterall, we’re clearing this place out before he’s even seen it.”
---
As the party prepares to leave, the door opens and several goblin spearmen and a bowmen who were on patrol walk into the room. By hook or crook, the goblins had stashed that silver, and now a new group of interlopers were trying to steal it!
Surprise Check (15% or 1-3 Chance): Party: 11 / Goblins: 3 - Surprised!
Branwell, who was standing near the back, is the first to sense that the door is opening behind him. He whistles for the rest of the party before turning and raising his Gnome Hooked Hammer, with the hammer side facing the approaching Goblins.
---
“What the hell are you doing with our silver?” the lead goblin asks.
“We’re here with the eviction notice,” Warwick said, “Now move along.”
“We stole that silver fair and square!” the goblin bowman said, pointing a cracked finger towards the bag.
---
Messalina tries to persuade the goblins to give up their claim: 22
---
“How about a deal? We all like deals, right?” Messalina asked, “How much silver is in that bag? Come on, you can tell us.”
“A lot,” The first goblin said.
“You didn’t count it?”
“We didn’t have time!” The Leader spat, “We know it's a lot.”
“Worth killing for,” Another goblin said, his hand gripping his spear. Everyone took a moment to ready themselves, hands on weapons, fingers moving to arrows.
Messalina tried to keep the situation from spiraling, “How about this? We give you a share of this silver. Say, 25 silver pieces per man and you leave this castle.”
“There’s more than 25,” The Leader growled.
“That’s all you’re getting, that and you get the live.”
---
Does the Goblin turn hostile? Let’s compare his wherewithal to stand against Messalina’s 22. He rolls a Charisma check of: 13 - Failure
Does the Goblin plan to double cross the party if given the chance? No, he will take the money and leave with his companions.
---
“There are four other goblins in this place, along with other types that we’ve avoided so far. Will you bribe them all?” The Leader asked.
“We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.”
---
Warwick gives the nod to Topace, who sneers, but counts out 25 silver per person. At four goblins, that comes to a 100 silver pieces. The bag contains 500 silver pieces altogether and is now down to 400 sp.
The Goblins leave out the front door. The party defeated them without the messy unpleasantness of a fight.
---
The party crosses the room and once again Messalina is given the job to investigate the door.
Investigate: 9 - Very Easy Success. If there was a trap, she would not have detected it. Luckily, she does not hear anything out of the ordinary as she tries the door.
---
“We should split the coins right now!” One goblin barked, “I should get the first pick!”
“Why should you get the first pick? You stand behind us with your bow.”
“That’s why I deserve first pick, I’m smart enough to use a bow,” The Goblin spat back.
Messalina walked in and saw four more goblins, two of whom were leaning on their spears while arguing with another goblin about two large piles of coins.
---
Messalina makes an immediate Stealth check to try to back away: 23 - Hard Success. She is able to quietly close the door in front of her and move behind the group before Warwick opens the door.
The Goblins look up, slightly surprised as Warwick appears, “I’m serving an eviction notice. What would it take to get all four of you to leave?”
“Nothing,” The bowman said, “We’ll just walk it out over your bodies!”
